Thank you for all of the love and support this little corner of the internet has received over the past several years. As friends and family members were getting married, their weddings fueled the inspiration for this blog. But as seasons of life change, my focus, along with those nearest and dearest, shifted away from the wedding planning stage and I began to neglect this blog.

I have decided to indefinitely retire Calligraphy by Shannon in an effort to pour my attention into my lifestyle blog The Scribble Pad where I will be merging past and future inspiration boards and parties. You will still be able to place orders for calligraphy, custom invitations, and hand stamped items through my etsy shop. And as always, you can stay in touch with me under my moniker, The Scribble Pad on my blog, etsy shop, facebook, and even twitter! I look forward to sharing this new adventure with you.

Jen and AJ: Chapter 2

Have you been following Jen and AJ's story? Here are the previous to posts: Intro and Chapter 1.

Chapter 2:
AJ has given me flowers nearly every week since we’ve been dating. Yes, it has shocked me too. People have asked me whether receiving flowers each week has made them less special… I have grown to expect them on Tuesdays when he will typically pop by my office with a bouquet (my co-workers now watch for him) but it has never made them less of a gift. In fact, it has proven that he consistently cares about me and the little things I love. He is looking for ways to make me feel special even though he doesn’t need to “pursue me” in the technical sense of the word anymore… and I value that far more than the actual flowers.

As I’m working with floral designer Erica Thebarge it has been fabulous to have so many gorgeous options at my fingertips. She was wonderful at our first meeting and let my mom, sister and I look through all of her floral books; she knew every flower and how they would look in arrangements. I’m looking at my choices with the question: “what would have the most meaning?” Does the flower I choose make any difference in how happy and healthy our marriage will be? Of course not, but it is fun to honor a tradition that AJ started about 45 weeks ago!

Right now I’m leaning toward an arrangement of ivory flowers with an adorable tag hanging from the vase that reads: “Hydrangeas: The First Flower AJ Brought Jen” or “Roses: Given for the First Time at the Proposal”.

The flowers in the photograph were done by Erica Thebarge for Danielle and Warren's wedding.

More Nautical Invitations

Searching for Nautical themed invitations has recently taken over my spare time. I have forgotten how much fun it can be to search through millions of wedding invitation options. (...and what a daunting task it can be!) I have been focusing on "Not Just Navy." After coming across quite a few colorful, but yet still elegant nautical invitations, I thought I would expand my search. Here is what I came up with:
I love the deep orange coral of the top left invitation. The yellow boarder and evelope liner work so well with the turquise shell of the invitation on the right. And the Save the Date on the bottom left has a sublte touch of glam with gold embossed seashore items.

Teal, turquise, aqua and more. I love the light and airy feel. Any of these invitations would be perfect for a summer beach wedding, yet they all remain refined enough for a semi-formal affair. The bottom left, with the partial shell is my absolute favorite!

(all invitations above can be found at: Papyrus)

Finally, for a nautical invitation suite with an updated look and feel, check out Joycebella Invites:

I love this invitation suite so much, I am racking my brain for an occasion to use it! Perhaps I can have a second wedding planned around this incredible invitation? I am not so sure my husband would go for that one. :-)

Thanks to Michael of Smith Photo Studios for the great tip!

I love inspirational quotes, powerful verses, and beautiful prose. Over the years I have been gathering these words for their possible use some day. Well, I have decided to share them will all of you. Hopefully you will enjoy them as much as I have. Perhaps you will even find a good use for them!

Real Couples: Sara and Caleb

Do you remeber all the way back to October when I shared the calligraphy I did for my friend Sara's wedding? I even gave you a Sneak Peek of her photos in January! Well, about that sneak peek...I am just now, in April finally giving you a few of their wedding photos! Here are the pictures Sara sent me of their beach front photo shoot:

Their wedding was an absolute blast! It encorporated Sara and Caleb perfectly, from their laid back style, to their love of the outdoors and travel. Their cake topper was a pair of hikers! They had dancing, a candy buffet and a make your own sundae station for dessert. They invited guests to sign their skim board, and collected cards in a lobster trap. I was so greatful to be able to join them for their special day!

Nautical Wedding Invitations

I am working with a bride on creating a nautical invitation suite. I will do the design calligraphy and then we hope to have it letterpressed. We are very excited, but the wedding is a long way out so we are only in the brainstorming phase. I love the ocean. I love the color blue (can't you tell) so this has been a blast.

Here are some of the designs I found that have been inspiring me so far:

Photo Credits, clockwise from top: Square invitation from eInvite.com, Navy blue Vera Wang invitation from finestationery.com, Sand castle invitation from Exclusively Weddings, and finally my own creation which was inspired by several invitations on Wedding Paper Divas.

But amidst all this fun, I have yet to see exactly what I am looking for to meet this bride's needs, which is why I will be creating something of my own. In my searches, I did find some additional nautical eye candy on Flickr. Brass Paperclip has wonderful ideas in her photo stream that I am currently loving!

I hope you enjoy browsing through this as much as I have! Oh, and if you have any additional "nautical" ideas, send them my way! The rain in DC has dampened my creativity...

Stamps Increase 2¢ on May 11th

Once again, the price of stamps is going up. On May 11th, the price for basic mail will increase from 42¢ to 44¢. What does this mean to the bride? You need to think ahead.

- Are you wedding invitations going out in the next month?
- Do you have reply cards that will be returned around May 11th or later?
- Have you already purchased stamps?
- Will you need extra postage?

There are a few styles of new stamps out there – but cutes ones aren't available yet.

So for now, here are your options: Use the Forever Stamp, the one with the liberty bell – they only cost you 42¢ right now, but will be valid long after your wedding date. (Psst...this is the most affordable option, but make sure that it is sufficient postage for your entire invitation suite)

Make your own custom stamps: There are many options availaible, but I would recommend you try USPS or Zazzle.com

Add a 2¢ stamp to the postage you have already purchased.

Go above and beyond! I have shown a few "extra postage" options in the image above because they are pretty and would get the job done with little extra effort. I particularly like the dragonfly 62¢ stamp. There is also the 59¢ heart and the 72¢ purple landscape.

But even after you have considered all of this don’t forget, weight and size are important. Make sure to bring one full invitation suite (translation: the invite and all the extras you plan to stuff in that envelope) to the post office to be weighed and measured. These days there are loads of invitations that are an odd size or extra weight requiring extra postage. Be sure you cover the charge or else you will be faced with the nightmare of 100+ invitation stamped: Return to Sender!
